In Pokémon Go, evolving Eevees into their different forms normally requires players to meet certain requirements.

For some Eevee evolutions, it is just a random chance (Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon). For others, you’ll need to do certain things (like evolve at night) to get the desired evolution.

But, did you know there is a naming trick you can use to force certain Eevee evolutions? But be warned, these tricks only work once per evolution, so make sure you pick good Eevees (or shinies!) with solid IVs.

Below, we’ll break down all Eevee evolutions, how to evolve them normally, and the naming tricks you can use to get the Eevee you want.

This is a big guide where we discuss each evolution, how to actually do the trick, and other tips. Make sure to use the table-of-contents at the top of the article to jump around if needed.

All Eevee evolutions and the names used to force specific evolutions

If you are looking for a specific Eevee for your collection, PvP, or raids, knowing all the details should make the process much easier.

And, again, please remember that the naming trick only works ONCE PER EVOLUTION.

Here’s the quick run-down, with additional information below the list:

  • Flareon – Pyro
  • Vaporeon – Rainer
  • Jolteon – Sparky
  • Espeon – Sakura
  • Umbreon – Tamao
  • Sylveon – Kira
  • Glaceon – Rea
  • Leafeon – Linnea

Flareon

  • Name trick: Pyro

Normally, to evolve Eevee into Flareon, you just have to spend the 25 candies and hope for the best.

But, by naming your Eevee “Pyro” and then pressing the Evolve button, you’re guaranteed to get Flareon.

Vaporeon

  • Name trick: Rainer

Vaporeon is another base evolution for Eevee, and one that normally is random chance.

Thankfully, by naming your Eevee Rainer before evolving it, you can force a Vaporeon evolution.

Jolteon

  • Name trick: Sparky

The final base evolution, Jolteon, is normally one of the three (Vaporeon, Flareon, Jolteon) that you get when evolving Eevees.

But, if you use the name Sparky, you can guarantee yourself a Jolteon evolution.

Espeon

  • Name trick: Sakura

Now that we’ve gone through the base evolutions, it’s time to start looking at the rest of the Eevee evolutions.

To evolve Eevee into Espeon, you typically need to set it as your buddy, walk 10 KM, earn two Eevee candies, and then evolve it during the day.

But, by naming your Eevee Sakura, you can skip all that hassle.

Umbreon

  • Name trick: Tamao

To evolve Eevee into Umbreon, you typically need to set it as your buddy, walk 10 KM, earn two Eevee candies, and then evolve it during the night.

But, by naming your Eevee Tamao, you can skip all that hassle.

Sylveon

  • Name trick: Kira

To evolve your Eevee into Slyveon, you typically have to set an Eevee as your buddy and earn a whopping 70 hearts with it. Then, you get the option to evolve it.

However, you can skip all that stuff and simply name your Eevee Kira to get an instant-evolution Sylveon.

Glaceon

  • Name trick: Rea

Glaceon is one of the newer Eevee evolutions added to Pokémon Go.

Typically, to evolve it into Glaceon, you would need 25 Eevee candies and a Glacial Lure. However, you can skip that whole process by naming your Eevee Rea.

Leafeon

  • Name trick: Linnea

Leafeon works similarly to Glaceon. Typically, you would need 25 candies and a Mossy Lure to get Leafeon.

But, by naming your Eevee Linnea, you can skip all of that hassle and instantly get the desired evolution.

How to do the Eevee name trick in Pokémon Go

If you want to make sure you are doing everything correctly, we’ll show you how everything works in a step-by-step guide.

You can also watch the embedded video above.

Time needed: 2 minutes

  1. First, select the Eevee you wish to evolveeevees in pokemon go

  2. Tap the pencil icon beside the nameedit pokemon name icon

  3. Change Eevee’s name to the desired quick evolution nameedit pokemon name screen

  4. Confirm the name then press Evolve

How to tell if you’ve done the name trick before

You can only do the Eevee naming trick once per evolution. But if you are returning to the game or simply can’t remember, there’s actually an easy way to tell if you’ve done the name trick before.

After naming your Eevee, check the Evolve menu option and look for either the question mark (?) or an outline of the Pokémon.

If you’ve used the name trick before, you will still see the question mark. If not, you’ll see an outline of the Pokémon (shown above).

This check only works on Eevees that you haven’t already primed for its evolutions. If you do the steps to get it prior, you may still see this outline.

But, must likely, that will not be an issue, as the naming trick is used to get around the steps.

Choose carefully

Again, and we can’t stress this enough – you can only use this naming trick once per evolution.

That means that once you evolve an Eevee in Flareon using “Pyro,” you can’t use that again to get another Flareon.

But that should cover it for everything to know about evolving Eevee in Pokémon Go.
