Honkai: Star Rail is an upcoming turn-based mobile gacha game from HoYoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact. But, is Honkai: Star Rail pay-to-win?
Look, we’ll cut to the chase. Right now, we can’t be positive, but it looks F2P-friendly. We’ll have to see what end-game content looks like, however.
The game just released, and players and players are still diving fully into the game.
Pull rates are in line with Genshin Impact. Which isn’t the greatest, but also not terrible.
By definition, gacha games like Honkai: Star Rail give players that spend money advantages. In this game, that comes in the form of better heroes, better weapons, and more.
But does that mean Honkai: Star Rail will be pay-to-win (P2W)? Well, it depends on what you want from your experience.
Do you have to spend money in Honkai: Star Rail?
No, we do not believe you have to spend money in Honkai: Star Rail. You’ll earn enough premium currency through gameplay and events to summon new characters.
It will take time to save up the currency to hopefully ensure the SSR characters you want. But, if you plan ahead, it should be possible.
That’s the basic answer, but not the full story. When it comes to P2W, it sometimes comes down to what you want from your mobile game experience.
Spending money isn’t necessary for PvE content
At present, we don’t know exactly what the end-game content is for Honkai: Star Rail.
But, going by HoYoverse’s other games, we don’t believe the player-vs-everything (PvE) content will require players to spend real money.
Sure, it will probably help clear the content quicker, but we doubt it will be necessary.
Spending money is probably required for competitive PvP
At present, we still don’t know the player-vs-player (PvP) details of Honkai: Star Rail. It’s possible there will be no PvP in the game.
However, if PvP ever comes to the game, it’s much more likely that end-game PvP content will be pay-to-win.

At the end of the day, it’s still too early to if Honkai: Star Rail is pay-to-win. HoYoverse’s track record leads us to believe that it will not be. But, time will tell.
With things like this, it’s also important to remember to never spend more than you can afford to lose. Gacha games, by nature, reward players that spend more money.

It’s a balance, I think! Yes, if collecting characters is your only reason for playing, then yes, maybe it is P2W. But if you are there for the strategy and story, you can definitely have a good time without spending cash.
