Honkai: Star Rail is the upcoming mobile RPG from HoYoverse. Veterans in the mobile game space will know this isn’t the first Honkai game. So, is Star Rail a sequel to Honkai Impact 3rd?
We’ll cut to the chase – the vast world HoYoverse has created across Honkai Impact 3rd, Genshin Impact, and the upcoming Star Rail can be confusing.
The fact that two of the games share the term “Honkai” might lead you to believe that the new game is a sequel.
But we don’t believe that Star Rail is a direct sequel to Honkai Impact 3rd. Instead, these games are all set within the Imaginary Tree and share similarities.
Understanding the Imaginary Tree and the world of Honkai
The Imaginary Tree is home to bubble worlds. This tree, along with the Sea of Quanta, are the only things to truly exist in the universe. They also have a rivalry against each other, so keep that in mind.
The bubble worlds located on the Tree’s branches are where the games take place. While they are unique, they do share some similarities.
Think of them as parallel universes, but also their own unique thing. This is why we think that Star Rail is not a direct sequel to Honkai Impact 3rd. But, rather, an off-shoot.
This is also why certain character names and character visuals stretch across both Honkai and Genshin.
In Honkai: Star Rail, there will be similar threads that connect the different worlds, but it will have its own unique story.
Now, of course, lore nerds are going to eat these threads up, and we personally can’t wait to hear more theories regarding the Imaginary Tree and the different characters.
What is a Honkai?
We keep mentioning the term Honkai, but what is that exactly?
Well, in the rivalry between the Imaginary Tree and the Sea of Quanta, Honkai act as a force to slow the growth of the Tree.
Humanity, which resides in one (or many) Bubble Worlds, must fight against this force to help the Imaginary Tree continue to grow.
Trust us, it’s very confusing, but we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t extremely interesting and creative.
Honkai: Star Rail will have a unique, engaging story
While we wait for Star Rail to release, we can only speculate on the story without looking at leaks. But, we don’t believe that Star Rail is a sequel to Honkai Impact 3rd.
What we do know, however, is that HoYoverse is known for creating engaging storylines, so we have high hopes that this game will continue that legacy.
