Marvel Snap players have certainly run across questionable opponents. But are those people just bad at the game, or are they actually bots?

Bots are an integral part of the early game Marvel Snap experience, and even players that have been playing for months can run across them. You can face bots at low levels, but even high-level players report seeing bots during their Seasonal grind.

Knowing if you are playing against a bot can be a great way to earn some extra Cosmic Cubes, but are there any telltale signs?

How to tell if your opponent is a bot in Marvel Snap

When determining if your opponent is a bot, there are a few things to look out for.

Default avatars and names

UPDATE 4/13/23: Marvel Snap developers have started using more unique names for Bots, making it sometimes difficult to determine bots by name.

Bots in Marvel Snap mostly have basic names (Tom, Sandy, Bob, etc.) and always use default avatar choices.

This is one way to spot a bot, but definitely doesn’t tell the full story. Many players use basic names and avatars.

Never emotes back

UPDATE 4/13/2023: It seems bots can now emote on occasion. This was mentioned by a developer in the official Marvel Snap Discord.

Bots will never use emotes in-game. Try sending some Hello’s or fist bump emotes and see if they respond.

If they do, they are not an actual bot. But again, plenty of players never respond to emotes, so definitely check against some of the other factors in this list.

Weird card placement choices

If your opponent seems to play the first available spot with random cards that spend all of their energy, it’s quite possible you’re playing against a bot.

Or maybe just Agatha. Which is practically the same thing.

Variant discrepancies

Bots in Marvel Snap often have a ton of variant art styles in their decks. This is to tempt real players to spend their hard-earned Gold.

Additionally, bots will use variant splits that aren’t actually possible (like Gold background with no particle effects).

If you see something like this, then you are playing against a bot.

Bots aren’t a bad thing in Marvel Snap

Ultimately, the inclusion of bots is a good thing in the game. It helps newer players learn the ropes, and it helps more seasoned players find matches quicker.

Thankfully, the Marvel Snap bots never use any underhanded tactics, and typically, they are pretty easy to play against if you are familiar with the game.
