Age of Empires is an all-time great RTS game – but can you replicate that experience on mobile?

While an official Age of Empires mobile game is in the works, a handful of solid mobile experiences replicate some of the gameplay and visuals.

If you are looking for a game to tide you over until the official release, or just enjoy trying different types of mobile strategy games, we’ve got you covered.

The best Age of Empires-like mobile games

Admittedly, finding a true AoE-like mobile experience is difficult, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

We should also mention that many of these games lean more into the 4X strategy genre (think Civilization), but we’re confident many AoE fans will find these enjoyable.

Here are our favorites:

The Battle of Polytopia

Choose between 16 different tribes (civilizations) as you fight for control of the board.

The Battle of Polytopia uses classic 4X turn-based gameplay that feels like a blend of Age of Empires and Civilization.

There are tech trees, resource management options, and more that let you play the game how you want in order to win.

The art style leans more cartoony with its bright colors, but don’t let that dissuade you. This is definitely a thinking person’s strategy game.

The Battle of Polytopia is available for Android, iOS, Steam, and emulators like BlueStacks.

RTS Siege Up!

RTS Siege Up! is a smaller mobile game, but what it lacks in an audience, it makes up for in gameplay.

This title offers over 30 single-player missions and nearly endless replayability through PvE and PvP missions.

As an added cherry on top, the game also offers a community feature that allows creators to make their own maps and share them with other players.

RTS Siege Up! is available on both Android and iOS ($3.99 on iOS).

Company of Heroes

Look, we’re going to get this out of the way up front – Company of Heroes costs $13.99.

But if you are a serious RTS fan and want a pure experience on mobile, there’s a lot to love about this PC port.

Set during WWII, CoH features squad-based gameplay and dynamic environments. It doesn’t feature resource gathering and management, however, which might be a negative if you enjoy that aspect of games like Age of Empires.

Company of Heroes is available on Android, iOS, and PC.

Plague Inc.

Plague Inc. is probably familiar to many of you, but if you are new to the strategy genre, this game is a classic and one we highly recommend.

In Plague Inc., you have one goal – take over the world…through the use of pathogens.

We’re not going to lie, it’s a bit morbid, but the gameplay and challenges it presents make everything feel just a bit better.

Plauge Inc. is available on Android, iOS, consoles, PC, and emulators like BlueStacks.

ROME: Total War

The second PC port on this list, ROME: Total War is a $10 classic RTS strategy game with a focus on big battles. There are also some turn-based elements for those that like a blend.

In the game, players will choose between many different factions with the goal of taking over Rome. You’ll need to use military prowess to overtake your opposition on your way to total domination.

We have seen some reviews saying the mobile controls aren’t great, however, so keep that in mind.

ROME: Total War is available on Android, iOS, and PC.

Clash of Clans

Clash of Clans is a staple in mobile games and for good reason. The game provides an RTS/tower defense gameplay loop that is easy to learn but difficult to master.

CoC is great for players that love building up their civilization and customizing the layouts of their cities. And thanks to the tower defense element, strategy matters, making the process even more enjoyable.

Clash of Clans is available on Android and iOS.

New games like Age of Empires continue to release

This will be an ever-evolving list as new games release.

We’re big fans of the genre, so definitely expect to see this continually updated as we explore new mobile games.
