With mobile gaming continuing to bring in more people everyday, major studios are starting to get in on the action. Now, Sony is forming a dedicated PlayStation mobile division.

In a blog post, Sony announced it is acquiring Savage Game Studios, which will develop “a AAA mobile live service action game.”

Interestingly enough, Savage Game Studios has actually never released a mobile game. That said, it was created by some industry veterans (both mobile and console) in 2020. Because of this, it seems Sony has confidence in the team.

According to Herman Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios,

“I’m really excited about what Savage is working on and I’m confident they will deliver a high-quality experience. Our move into mobile, like our expansion into PC and live service games, strengthens our capabilities and our community, and complements PlayStation Studios’ purpose to make the best games that we can.”

Mobile games continue to crush it, bringing in billions of players every year. With that kind of money on the table, and the accessibility that mobile games offer, it makes sense to see Sony doing this for its PlayStation brand.

As IGN rightfully points out, it’s still unclear in what direction Savage Game Studios is going.

Will the new mobile PlayStation division work on a new IP, or will the mobile studio be handed something like Spider-Man? Time will tell. Regardless, it’s an exciting time to be a mobile gamer.
